The garden behind Jack's house has gone wild with creatures set loose by the magic beans Jack and his kid sister Maddy planted. One particularly mean creature has kidnapped Maddy and carried her off. Now Jack and his neighbor Lilly must follow her to a world between worlds beyond the vines and stalks, where giants grind the bones of human children to feed their beast in the castle up above, and a fearsome goblin king rules down below. It'll take more than Lilly's bag of concoctions and tricks, and more than one hero, to rescue Maddy, reunite Jack's family, and bring them all safely home again.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book for free and decided to review it. This in no way impacts my opinion.

This is a double review as I will be talking about Volume 1 and 2 of the MIGHTY JACK series by Ben Hatke! This is a graphic novel series and I would definitely recommend it if you are looking for some good fun and an honest to goodness time.

I really liked the retelling aspect and the way that the story was told. There were a lot of great moments but I think that there should have been a third volume to flesh out this one story. It felt like everything went a little too quickly for this story and some aspects weren't as well developed as I would have liked.

I liked the character development and how caring Jack was, especially to Maddy. It was great to see him grow throughout this series but I would have liked a bit more growth, especially at the end.

The artwork was really nice and I really enjoyed the panels. Each told a part of the story and I didn't feel as though any of the panels didn't move the story forward which is always nice. The colouring and line work was gorgeous as well.

Overall I really liked this one and would recommend this one for sure. If you want a good, quick graphic novel that takes a twist on a classic fairytale, this is the one for you.

Ben Hatke is the author and illustrator of the New York Times–bestselling Zita the Spacegirl trilogy, the picture books Julia's House for Lost Creatures and Nobody Likes a Goblin, and the graphic novels Little Robot and Mighty Jack.
